Update Received: July 30, 2011

Dear Greg and RMLR,

Well, 2 1/2 months after adopting Ben (previously Ron) is doing well and adjusting to life in our often chaotic house.  We've been working on some training with him and he's made progress. The hound in him (i.e. strong sense of smell!) still takes over when the opportunity arises for him to run away!  He has been a good running partner for me and a great playmate for the kids.

Hope all is well with you and Rocket and RMLR!

Thank you!

Jake

Rescued June 22, 2011 - Adopted August 14, 2011

Update received August 16, 2011:

Jake is truly an extraordinary dog.  I learned from a hunter friend of mine from Kansas, that many hunters give up their dogs if they won’t hunt (I am against hunting but he has been a friend for many years and has had lots of chocolate Labs).  I told him that a lot of dogs seem to be from MO and KS….he figured that was why.  He noted that often they are very well looked after – but if they won’t hunt, the hunters have no use for them.  Horrible, but true.

Anyway, we suspect Jake has German Shorthair in him or maybe Great Dane…could that be possible?  Either way, he’s absolutely adorable and has settled in well.  He and Zoey really like each other – and he loves us!  We took them swimming to Zoey’s favorite swimming hole last night and he did great.  Not sure he’d been swimming before but he was very game and watched everything Zoey was doing.  He is really good off leash, stays right with us (even as Zoey bolts a half mile away after the prairie dogs).  I think his paws are a bit sensitive.  He’s very careful where he puts his feet….so we’ll slowly build up to outdoor walks in rough terrain.  Or get him boots if it doesn’t improve.  I think it will…his feet are very silky, not rough at all.

He is gentle with the cats – and Eliot, our white cat who thinks he’s a dog loves him.  I’m not sure Jake knew what to do the first time Eliot came over and rubbed up against him (his sign of approval).  Jake looked up at me and told him it was all OK and he seemed pleased.  Our other very timid cat also likes him, which is unusual.  He is so eager to please….he loves the backyard.  He spent yesterday (after the “escape”) sleeping at my husband’s feet with Zoey.

Please send our great thanks to everybody at RMLR.  What you do is so important…thank you!!!!!
